Events to celebrate Seniors will be taking place across Australia and New Zealand from September to November.

The Australian Capital Territory kicks off the events on 21 September with the Seniors Expo. The expo showcases goods, services and programs for older people.

The Victorian Seniors Festival will take place from 1 to 8 October. The beginning of the event coincides with International Day of the Older Person on 1 October, with the opening celebration to be held at Federation Square.

The festival will host a wide range of events and activities across Victoria highlighting this year’s theme: ‘Learn, Love, Live’. The festival is aimed at the over 60s and includes free and low-cost events aimed at bringing seniors together to have fun and learn new skills.

In New Zealand, the Wellington City Council will host Te Wiki Kaumātua – Seniors Week from 1 to 8 October. The week features a series of community events and activities for older people. The event aims to build connections and reduce the social isolation that can be experienced later in life.

Queensland devotes the month of October to its Seniors, adopting the theme ‘Social Connections’. This festival seeks to challenge age stereotypes, highlight local programs, services and volunteering opportunities and promote increased social connectedness. Queensland’s Seniors Month is coordinated by the Council on the Ageing and includes activities to recognise National Grandparents Day on 29 October.

South Australia kicks off Age Friendly Services Week on 1 October. The week provides an opportunity for older people to give feedback about the age friendliness of state government services as part of the state’s Plan for Ageing Well 2020-2025.

Down south, Tasmania will honour its seniors from 16 to 23 October. COTA Tasmania coordinating a week of events across the state.
